Full Description

PRN 35725 During trial trenching an east-west aligned post medieval stone wall was recorded. This is thought to be from a building that fronted onto Eastgate. A large assemblage of post medieval pottery was recovered from this site, some 477 sherds of which are of Bourne D type ware. This large amount of pottery could be indicative of manufacture. Material that is obviously sub-standard or perhaps wasters was found together with a kiln prop. This evidence is all suggestive of the presence of kilns in the vicinity. Other imported wares were also recovered; one worthy of note is a single sherd of Chinese porcelain from the Ch'ien Lung period - 1736-95; this may signify moderately higher status occupation in the area during the 18th century. {1}{2} During an archaeological excavation at Eastgate (TF 1039 1990), evidence for pottery production during the 15th-16th centuries was recorded. This included remains of a potters workshop, pot drying area and clay preparation pits. Extensive quantities of wasters were also found. A stone building, probably domestic in nature, was also revealed. Pottery making at the site appears to have ceased in the 16th century and subsequently brick buildings were built in the area. {3}{4}
