Full Description

PRN 54732 During Phase 1 excavations at Greetwell Quarry, a ring ditch measuring circa 6m in diameter was recorded, thought to be the remnants of a round barrow. The ring ditch contained animal bone in all three fills; the tertiary fill also contained possible Beaker pottery thought to date to the late third millenium BC/early Bronze Age. The presence or absence of human remains was not ascertained.{1}{2} A pit was also recorded underlying an Iron Age ditch, and possibly indicating a pre-Iron Age demarcation of the triple ditch boundary running through the site. The pit contained animal bone and a Bronze Age barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. A further pit (containing a sherd of 3rd century Roman pottery) and a posthole lay close to the edge of the ring ditch and could also be associated with it.{1}{2} Environmental sampling indicates a fairly open calcareous dry grassland environment with some local shaded habitats at this time.{1}{2}
