Archaeological excavations were carried out within the Phase 1 area (circa 15ha) of a proposed extension to Greetwell Quarry. The excavations had several aims, including investigation of: the triple ditch system and any associated features, the nature of any associated Iron Age field system, characterisation and dating of a possible Roman building, and the nature of any medieval boundary features. A watching brief was carried out over the whole Phase 1 area, with provision for further excavation should significant archaeology be uncovered. The excavations therefore comprised Area A/B (the original excavation area), Area G (added to investigate burials discovered during topsoil removal), Area H (extending eastwards from Area A/B for circa 42m to investigate structural remains identified in Area A/B), and Area I (six isolated areas, two of which remained unexcavated, to investigate a masonry spread, a flint scatter, possible wall footings, and a channel). The total area stripped amounted to circa 21,155m², with Area G comprising circa 1800m², Area H comprising 2450m², and Area I comprising 4100m². Area J measured circa 5000m² but remained unexcavated.{1}
