Summary
Medieval domestic activity at Aveland Way
Type and Period (3)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
PRN 35556
During trial trenching a series of 11th-12th century features were recorded, these include a gully and a post hole/gully terminus which have subsequently been interpreted as drainage features. Four pieces of iron slag were retrieved from the site, the small quantity suggests that smelting did not occur at the site but in close proximity. Environmental sampling, the presence of a pit and the recovery of 11th-12th century pottery sherds together with animal remains all indicate domestic activity at this time, although the dearth of finds after this date suggest that the site was abandoned until modern times at a approximately early to mid thirteenth century.{1}{2}
