Full Description

PRN 62055 During a watching brief an Iron Age settlement was identified, this was further investigated during trial trenching. The settlement appears to have dated from the late Iron Age to the very beginning of the Roman period. It initially consisted of a substantial ditch and a roundhouse, a pair of parallel gullies were uncovered that appear to represent a small rectangular enclosure, possible used as an animal pen. A pit with a large number of pottery sherds, animal bone. and fired clay suggest a significant level of domestic activity. Another phase of settlement use is suggested with the recutting of the internal and boundary ditches, it also appears that the roundhouse was replaced with another. Artefactual evidence recovered include a spindle whorl and triangular loomweights.{1}{2}{3}{4}
