Full Description

PRN 35523 During fieldwalking nine sherds of Roman pottery, concentrated in two clusters on the eastern side of the field were recorded. Geophysical survey in this area shows a rectilinear enclosure which has been interpreted as a possible Roman settlement.{1}{2} An archaeological watching brief and subsequent program of excavation along the route of the Silk Willoughby to Staythorpe Gas Pipeline. The work identified a Romano-British farmstead and associated enclosure dating to between the 1st and 4th century. Two phases of activity were noted; the first phase (1st to 2nd century) was located mainly on the western mudstones, but with outlying features to the east of the field. The features consisted of linear features, ditches and gullies, probably the remains of enclosures and land boundaries. Evidence for domestic activity is sparse for this phase, although a few small pits were located on the lower slopes. In the second phase (2nd to 4th century) activity moved onto the upper slopes. A large, possibly defensive ditch was cut along the crest of the hill and appears to be the boundary of the site in the Roman period. At the opposite end three large ditches which were parallel to each other (north to south aligned) probably indicate the eastern boundary. Inside the ditches were the remains of a small sub-circular structure enclosing a small platform, probably representing a small domestic building.{3}{4}
