Full Description
Cropmarks of prehistoric or Roman settlement activity was identified in this location from aerial photographs. The site consists of a group of conjoined ditched enclosures and associated trackways. A large rectangular enclosure has an internal division and part of a smaller enclosure within it. Smaller enclosures are attached along its southern side, with a possible funnel entrance between two of them, leading into the large enclosure. Three small enclosures adjoin the south-east corner of the large enclosure, one containing an incomplete hut circle. An incomplete enclosure and possible trackway lie west of the large enclosure. A ditch extending north from the large enclosure is double-ditched at its northern end and may be part of a further trackway. Fragments of further ditches to the west of this possible trackway may be enclosures or trackways. {1}{2}
To the south of Brills Farm is what appears to be part of a double-ditched enclosure. It is possible that the road to the north respects the northern part of the enclosure. A small quantity of Romano-British pottery was recorded to the north of the farm. It may be an Iron Age defended enclosure or hillfort. {3}
A very pronounced ditch and bank profile was noted during a site visit, on the south side of Brills Farm. The whole site is in a commanding position on the 100ft contour, where it forms a spur over-looking flat land to the south and west. There is a slight suggestion of a bank return on the west side of the cottage, west of the farm, giving an oval shape approximately 300 yards in length. The size is similar to Burgh banks in Old Somerby. {4}
Further traces of probable Iron Age and Roman settlement activity, to the north of that previously identified, was noted during a magnetometry survey conducted in August 2017. The remains were recorded as a concentration of linear and discrete magnetic anomalies, to the south of Villa Farm. Several modern buried services were also recorded, running across this area and resulting in large areas of magnetic disturbance, which may be masking other archaeological features in this vicinity. {5}
