Full Description

PRN 35437 During trial trenching, undated slag and ore layers were recorded directly on top of the natural clay and below a medieval pit, leading to the conclusion that they dated to the early medieval period. It was thought that the site had been stripped of the natural soil prior to the deposition of the slag and ore. The slags were thought to be a primary dump, as furnace slags were not found, although fragments of furnace structure were. The slags consisted of tap and hearth bottom slags, possible smithing slag, and some hammerscale, suggesting that primary smithing was not taking place on the site. The site where the actual metalworking took place is unlocated, but presumably in the immediate vicinity.{1}{2}
