Full Description

60372 A possible Anglo-Saxon cemetery was discovered in the fields to the north east of Coleby Hall around 1833. In the British Museum are a glass bead and a ring from 'Coleby Hall' (H2, 12-5; H5,11-30). The following extract from Lincolnshire Notes and Queries, 1897, throws light on this. Mr Charles Mainwaring was the tenant of Coleby Hall around 1833. Writing to his landlord (Mr Tempest) he describes how his great plough was at work breaking up the old park or fields to the north and east of the Hall, adjoining the High Road, into arable. "The quantity of stones I have extracted from the land would surprise you, not to mention the bones of 80 bodies with several curiosities attached to them. We find more every day and they are scattered singly over the fields and lie near the surface. I can supply with plenty of knives and spears and with some broken urns and brooches". {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}
