Full Description

PRN 54593 During trial trenching, pits, postholes and other features were recorded. A curvilinear feature had limestone fragments at its base, which may have been supports for uprights forming part of a timber structure or an enclosure. A north/south alignment of postholes and a possible stakehole may indicate a fence line or one wall of a timber structure. A ditch may be the eastern boundary of a plot fronting onto Vicarage Road. The environmental sample contained slag and a quantity of hammerscale, indicating iron smithing in the vicinity (see PRN 54594). There is a break in the ceramic sequence from the 14th century to at least the late 15th century, more likely the early 16th century, reflecting the widespread contraction and depopulation of settlements in the 14th century.{1}{2}
