Full Description

PRN 61905 St Peter's church dates from about 1180 AD. The earliest surviving parts can be found in the north aisle, where some Early English work survives. The west tower was replaced after the previous tower fell in the mid-18th century, while the church itself was restored in 1859-1860 and more extensively in 1875-1876 by Charles Kirk. The north and south aisles have three-bay arcades, and the south aisle was rebuilt in brick in the mid-18th century. The clerestory is Perpendicular in style, while the chancel is in the Decorated style, with sedilia, a piscina and a sepulchre which were probably begun by William de Herleston, rector from 1325 to about 1329.{1} A watching brief during extension works revealed the foundations of the north aisle and the tower.{2}{3} For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {4}
