- QUARRY (Post Medieval - 1770 AD? to 1799 AD?)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
PRN 54585
An excavation recorded a late 18th century quarry for the extraction of a crumbly sandstone/mudstone. The stone may have been used to repair the hollow way to the east of the site, or may have been used when creating the dam which was built to form Fillingham Lake. The quarry appears to have been backfilled rapidly after opening - the deposit sealing the quarry contained late 18th-early 19th century domestic pottery, and no soil formation had taken place in the quarry base, the backfill resting on the bedrock.{1}
