Full Description

Earthwork remains of medieval ridge and furrow, identified on aerial photography by the National Mapping Programme. {1} The remains of the ridge and furrow immediately adjacent to Long Holt Wood were recorded in January 2010, during a topographic survey conducted to inform proposed tree planting. The remains were identified as a series of low, parallel linear earthworks, aligned on a west-south-west to east-north-east axis. Earthwork remains of a probable former headland were also recorded at the western edge of the site, indicating that the ridge and furrow did not extend into the area covered by the woodland. {2}{3} Further traces of medieval ridge and furrow, to the south of that previously identified by the NMP, could be discerned on Google Maps satellite imagery. {4}
