Full Description

61720 A Romano-British pottery scatter was found in the former Wilsford quarry, east of Ermine Street. {1}{2} Fieldwalking in 2001 recovered late second to early third century pottery and a quantity of burnt limestone walling stone from a restricted area. The walling stone was burnt on the face only and was clearly from a structure immediately beneath the ploughsoil, presumably one or more grain driers. A discrete area measuring circa 18m east/west and at least 12m north/south was identified, containing clear evidence of occupation in the late second and early third century and structures probably of the same date. This was probably part of a larger site of which the major element is now destroyed. {3}{4}
