Full Description

61672 The hospital of St John the Baptist was founded before 1244 at Mere by Simon de Roppel for a chaplain and 13 poor men, and was at that time a leper hospital. The hospital was not suppressed, but by 1553 the number of poor men had been reduced to 3, and had ceased to exist by 1680. A list of wardens dated from 1247-1558. {1}{2}{3}{4} The published site is marked by amorphous earthworks. {4} During the construction of a water pipeline from Bracebridge Heath to Dunston ditches were identified along Bloxholm Lane. Although they are undated, the sizes of some of the ditches are large, and it is suggested that they are moat-like, perhaps relating to the hospital, or even Mere settlement. {5}{6}
