Full Description

61657 A Roman inscription was found east of Folly Lane in 1963 by J.B. Tinsley, together with second-third century pottery, building material and tesserae. The inscription reads 'IN HIS PRAED(IS) AUREL(IAE) CON(CE)/SSAE SAN(CTIS)/SIMAE PU(ELLAE)' which means 'On this estate (lie buried the bones) of Aurelia Concessa, a very holy girl.' {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} An amphora body sherd (dated 50-120 AD) with a stamp (EROTI?) was found on this site in 1971. {7}{8} An excavation by T. Hayes and others was undertaken near the site of earlier finds of Romano-British material. A stone foundation of irregular shape, but presumably the base of a stone and timber building was found. No trace of walls survived, but quantities of charred timber and nails were found around the edges. Other finds included pottery, roofing tiles, flue tiles and tesserae. {9}{10}{11}
