Full Description

PRN 70218 The dedication of this church refers to Edmund who was king of East Anglia and who died a martyr in 870. This saint was promoted especially during the second half of the 10th century, which suggests that this church was possibly founded during that period. The parish appears to have been small, although it did receive some elite patronage, and it had less than 10 inhabitants by 1428. Shortly afterwards, in 1437, it is reported that it had been destroyed by the Precentor. The location and extent of this church and its churchyard are uncertain, although it is thought to lie between the north ends of Bank Street and Free School Lane, just to the south of Silver Street . {1}{2}{3}{6} During a watching brief, disarticulated human remains, thought to have come from the cemetery of St. Edmund's, were recorded.{4}{5}
