Full Description

PRN 61627 During trial trenching, the remains of a post-medieval farm were recorded. The farm was shown on a plan dated 1849, and so is thought to have been built in the first half of the 19th century. It also appears on the 1956 Ordnance Survey map, but not on the maps dating to the 1970's, so it must have been demolished at some time between these two dates. A brick-capped well shown on the 1887 Ordnance Survey map could not be securely dated, as it was so full of water, the interior construction could not be examined for dating purposes. The bricks used to cap the well suggest it was sealed in the 19th or early 20th century. Two stone walls running parallel to a surviving stone wall were recorded, and formed part of a range of barns. The foundation of a doorway and the end of a further barn were also recorded, and three pits formed the foundations for the supporting pillars along the front of an open barn. A sandy deposit with a stratigraphic relationship to the farm buildings is thought to be a ground surface.{1}{2} Site of a farmstead, Sleaford. Demolished 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with L-plan range plus detached buildings to the third side of the yard. The farmhouse was detached from the main working complex. Isolated location. {3}
