Full Description

Probable 19th century cottage named as 'Mill Cottage', adjacent to the Car Dyke at Blankney North Drove. The structure is of two storeys, built of red brick and features a slate roof with chimney stacks at both gable ends. The window openings and doors are of wood. The building has been much enlarged by a modern two-storey extension built in a similar style to the north-west, and a single-storey extension to the south-east. {1} Dumped deposits relating to the initial construction of Mill Cottage were recorded in February 2001, during archaeological monitoring of groundworks for the construction of the north-western extension. The deposits appear to have been spread to help level the ground prior to construction, and comprised a mixture of brown sandy silt and brick fragments. A small assemblage of 18th and early 19th century pottery was recovered from the deposits, along with an iron peg or spike. The pottery assemblage was comprised of a range of fabrics and forms, but included a butterpot and several pancheons, which were often used as milk pans, which may imply that the site was involved in dairy farming. {2}{3}
