Full Description

Bracebridge Heath airfield was established in 1916 for the final assembly and testing of aircraft from the centres of production at Robeys and Clayton and Shuttleworth. It lay east of the A15 (Sleaford Road), south of Bracebridge Heath hospital. The associated buildings lay between the airfield and the road. The end of the First World War saw a great reduction in the need for aircraft for the RAF and flying ceased in 1919. The buildings, however, remained, and during the Secnd World War the site was used as a factory by A.V.Roe who specialised in aircraft repair. In the 1950s the site was used for both restoration of historic aircraft and cutting edge research. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5} One of the buildings which survived, and is listed, is a triple aircraft hangar of Belfast Truss construction (a term which refers to the laminated timber roof beam design). An application has been made in 2000/2001 to demolish the building. It was delisted and no longer survives. For the full description and the legal address of this former listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {6}{7}
