Full Description

Late medieval activity was recorded in this location in July 2000, during archaeological monitoring of new development on land at Church End. The activity was identified as buried silt deposits and two linear features, thought to represent the remains of a probable fishpond or dyke and a former drainage ditch. The ditch could be seen to re-cut an earlier ditch running along the same east to west alignment, although the exact date of this earlier feature could not be determined (see PRN 13565). A small assemblage of 14th to 16th century Toynton All Saints/Bolingbroke ware pottery sherds and a few fragments of animal bone were recovered from the fills of the features and the overlying deposits. {1}{2} A second probable late medieval fishpond was recorded in this location in July 2002, during further archaeological monitoring of new development on land at Church End. The pond appeared to have been deliberately backfilled in the early 20th century, when the land was given over to agricultural use. A single redeposited sherd of 13th to 15th century Toynton All Saints ware pottery was recovered from the backfill of the pond, along with a small collection of late 19th and early 20th century material. {3}{4}
