Full Description
PRN 43903
During trial trenching, a metalled surface was recorded, thought to have been constructed in the 13th-15th centuries, as a piece of 13th-15th century pottery was embedded within the road. This surface was not horizontal across the width exposed in the trench, but was level at the east end of the trench, rising by circa 0.35m towards the centre of the trench to form a broad ridge about 3m in width. The surface then dropped toward the west end of the trench. Prior geophysical survey on the site had suggested that the metalling formed part of a north-west/south-east linear feature running across the south-eastern corner of the site. Projecting the line of the feature southwards, it appears to be a continuation of the road from Orby to Addlethorpe and Ingoldmells, which still runs out of the village, albeit on a slightly different alignment. Ditches bordering the site support this conclusion, as those on the south and west of the site run the full length of the boundary, while that on the north only runs along the western two-thirds of the boundary, terminating where the geophysics results show the linear fetaure reaching the northern boundary. The road appears to have been realigned in the 16th/17th centuries, based on pottery found in deposits used to level over the now redundant road. {1}{2}{3}
