Full Description

PRN 70212 During a watching brief, 19 sherds of Roman pottery were recorded in a mid-third century context. The assemblage included Black Burnished ware 1, which is often associated with a military presence, and Central Gaulish Samian. This combination is also found in the Roman military barrack assemblages from the Minster Library extension, York. It has been suggested that this assemblage may represent the remains of a legionary's individual issue.{1}{2} The upper surface of a large flat stone covered by a layer of burnt material was also observed. The stone extended beyond the limits of the excavation to east and west.{1}{2}
