Full Description
61277
A Bronze Age socketed axe mould in two parts and four or five axes were found in Washingborough Fen when the land was enclosed, in the area of the barrow cemetery (60327). They were found in c.1830, and the mould and one axehead were exhibited at the Lincoln meeting of the Society of Antiquaries in 1848. The mould is in City and County Museum in the Trollope/Carlbom collection. None of the axes appeared to fit the mould. There are two socketed axes in the British Museum recorded as being from Lincolnshire and have almost identical patinas. These were acquired in 1854 from the collection of Mr Willson. There is a real possibility that they formed part of this deposit. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
