Full Description
PRN 13554
During an evaluation, two palaeochannels were recorded in the south of the site, one partially backfilled. A buried soil was recorded in the north of the site. The partially backfilled palaeochannel contained 14th-16th century pottery, while the buried soil contained occupation debris of 15th-17th century date, consisting of animal bone, tile and pottery. These are thought to represent manuring scatter. The buried soil is thought to be an agricultural soil - a map of 1741 shows the site to be part of a large enclosed field. This evidence indicates late medieval/post-medieval human habitation in the vicinity, although no settlement features were present on the site itself. The evaluation also revealed rubbish pits containing domestic refuse, and make-up layers containing 19th -20th century pottery were recorded. These remains are thought to relate to buildings depicted on the site on a map of 1829. Finds from both the pits and the make-up layers contain charcoal, shell animal bone, coal pottery and building meterials. {1}{2}
During a watching brief, a single sherd of 13th-14th century french imported medieval pottery was recovered. TF 3325 4335 {3}{4}
During a later watching brief, a scatter of 18th-20th century pottery was recovered from the topsoil. TF33254345 {5}{6}
