Full Description
Washingborough barrow cemetery appears to comprise approximately thirty barrows spread over a wide area from the east of Washingborough village to Middle Fen Lane in the west. There are two possible linear alignments. One is in the western part of the area and is aligned roughly north-south. The other is in the south eastern part of the area, and is aligned north east-south west. The barrows survive as earthworks and cropmarks seen on aerial photographs. {1}{2}{3}
During fieldwalking by the Washingborough Group in Field 8 (TF 0490 7080) a barrow was noted as being apparent as a mound. Five sandy areas may be ploughed out barrows. 14 flints with signs of secondary were recovered from the vicinity (61375). {4}{5}
During a watching brief on land to the rear of Five Mile Lane (TF 04874 70501), an area thought to contain two barrows was investigated. No trace of the barrows was found, however it was noted that the natural sand in these areas was significantly higher than on the rest of the site and it has been suggested that the mounds are actually sand dunes. {6}{7}
