Full Description

Several brickworks were established in Waddington after land adjacent to the railway station was auctioned in October 1875. Four of these local yards joined together in 1889 to form the Lincoln Brick Company, said to be the biggest source of employment in Waddington from the 1880s to the 1960s. The works were advantageously situated next to the railway station yard, which allowed easy transportation of the finished bricks, and bricks from Waddington were said to have been used in the restoration of Tattershall Castle in 1912. {1}{2}{3} Brick production at the works ceased in December 1975. Two types of bricks (pressed and wire-cut) were produced on the site in two separate plants. The site consisted (from east to west) of a clay crushing plant, which fed directly to the pug mill and then to the wire-cut brick plant. From here, bricks were moved on trolleys on rails into the nearby drying sheds and thence into the first Hoffman kiln. West of this lay the engine house which provided the power for the adjacent pressed brick plant, with an office and mess room to the east. {4}
