Full Description
An Anglo-Saxon cemetery has been identified over a number of years in this area. Eleven inhumations including one female were reported in 1947 by Mr H. Priestly who donated beads from the site to City and County Museum (100.56). Further burials were found in 1966, and further beads were donated to City and County Museum. Iron and bronze objects (SK 976 640) were also found. More finds were reported to City and County Musem (probably from the 1966 burials), and included a necklace, one pair of cuff clasps, cruciform brooch, two small-long brooches, 12 glass beads and 16 pottery beads, a narrow tubular object (a lace tag or decoration from a sleeve clasp), and the 'eye' parts of two pairs of wrist clasps. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}{8}{9}{12}
At least four, possibly five, additonal west-east aligned graves associated with this cemetery were revealed by trenching for a new water main beneath Grantham Road. The full extent of the cemetery remains unknown, although it seems restricted to a band about 12m wide. More than one phase of burial appears to be present. Evidence of a copper alloy wrist item survived, although no objects were found. Two nails, indicating coffins were found. The alignment and presence of coffins would indicate a seventh century date, later than those previously reported. {10}{11}
