Full Description

PRN 23663 During trial trenching in 1998, post medieval features were recorded. A brick structure, thought to be a cellar, was represented by walls at the rear of the property. A doorway through one of these walls had been blocked-up with bricks before the room began to be infilled, which probably began in the seventeenth to eighteenth century. This action may have been taken to raise the ground surface to counteract the threat of flooding. The room was periodically refloored, indicated by bedding layers which were cut by linear gullies running along one of the standing walls, interpreted as robber trenches to extract joists or other floor supports. Coal dust in an eighteenth to nineteenth century make-up layer suggests that the cellar was used as a coal cellar at that time. An eighteenth century rubbish pit was identified beneath the cellar floor, and a probably post medieval posthole indicates possible structural timberwork.{1}{2} A north-south aligned brick wall was found during a watching brief in 1999. Butting up to this was a second east-west aligned brick wall constructed with a Flemish bond, commonly used from the 18th c. onwards. To the south-west of the walls was a north-south aligned brick structure. A dry-bonded brick arch was found situated above a void.{3}{4}
