Full Description

A sparse scatter of prehistoric flints was recorded in October 1999, during archaeological monitoring of the installation of a replacement gas pipeline between Trusthorpe and Candlesby. The assemblage was found in this location to the south of Claxby St Andrew, and was comprised of twelve worked flint fragments including a broken knife blade. The flints were recovered from an area of more than 100m and were thought to represent a general spread of artefacts, rather than a clearly associated group. Two of the pieces were typical of the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age periods, and whilst the other fragments could not be as closely dated, they were all thought to be consistent with this date range. The assemblage contained a variety of tool types, including probable scrapers, piercers, flakes and core fragments. It was thought that the assemblage derived from domestic activity, and possibly indicated that a former settlement site had been located in this vicinity. {1}{2}
