Full Description

PRN 61100 The Game House at Doddington Hall is a sixteenth century cottage of red brick with stone dressings. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} {2} A historic building survey was undertaken in advance of the redevelopment and conversion of The Gamehouse, Doddington Hall, Doddington. The survey involved the photographing of buildings affected by the redevelopment, as well as preparing written notes and sketches. The photographs and drawings were referenced to architects drawings, and a written appraisal describing and interpreting the historic fabric of the building was produced. The Gamehouse has only born that name since the 1960s. Before that it had been known as the Granary, referring to its earlier use. In view of its situation in the service yard to the hall, and overlooking the hall gardens, it seems very possible that it may originally have been the home of the estate manager or agent. The Gamehouse is one of three substantial brick buildings all built with the hall in the period from 1595 when the estate was purchased by Thomas Tailor to 1600 when evidence indicates that the hall domes were topped out. These outbuildings are laid out on an orthogonal plan with the hall and its garden walls. Though much changed in details, the three outbuildings retain a great deal of their character. In plan and elevation, The Gamehouse divides into three clearly defined sections, which relate to the three stages in which it was built; the original Elizabethan East Block, the 17th century Centre Block and the 18th to 19th century West Block {3}{4}
