Full Description
The settlement of Allington was first documented in the Domesday Book, and was known at that time as Adelingetone. Its origins, therefore, probably lie in the Late Saxon period. Evidence of this is provided by fragments of late Saxon and medieval pottery found immediately north of the old church site (see PRN 30145) in 1992 (PRN 35175a - SK 8585 4030). No human remains were found. The pottery was identifed as 2 sherds of Lincoln shelled ware (late 10th to mid 13th century), 2 sherds of Lincoln sandyware (mid 13th to early 14th century), and 1 sherd of Lincoln green glaze. {1}{2}
Earthworks have been noted in the field to the east of the old Manor House (PRN 35175b - SK 856 401). {3}
A ridge and furrow field system is recorded as surviving as earthworks around the village. The field system extends further than is indicated by National Mapping Programme. {4}{5}{6}
There is an aerial photograph of a view of the county boundary from the west, showing how it follows the medieval furlongs. {7}
A north-east to south-west aligned gully and a pit were recorded in 1997-8, during a watching brief (PRN 35175c - SK 857 400). A potsherd was recovered from the fill of the pit, and was dated to the 10th to 12th centuries. The pit truncated the gully, indicating an earlier date of origin for the gully. The site was probably peripheral to the medieval village. {8}{9}
A pit and linear feature were revealed in December 2002, during trial trenching at The Nurseries, Bottesford Road, Allington (PRN 35175d - SK 855 401). The pit contained 11th to 13th century pottery and animal bone, and was thought to possibly be a backfilled well or refuse pit. A linear feature was also revealed near to the pit, and a sherd of 13th century pottery was found in its fill. {10}{11}
Although no archaeologically significant features or deposits were encountered, several sherds of redeposited medieval pottery were recovered in May 2014, during an archaeological watching brief at 1 Bottom Street, Allington (PRN 35175e - SK 8591 4025). The pottery was recovered from a modern made-ground layer, and comprised a single Bourne-type ware fragment and two Nottingham Light Bodied Glazed ware fragments, dating from the mid 12th to 14th centuries. {12}{13}
