PRN 70100
DURING EXCAVATIONS OF THE CENTRAL LIBRARY CONSTRUCTION THE REMAINS OF THE SAXON RAMPART WERE IDENTIFIED. THERE WAS POTTERY DATING TO THE NINTH AND TENTH CENTURY AND FEATURES ASSOCIATED WITH THE LATE SAXON OCCUPATION OF THE SITE CUTTING INTO THE DUMPED LAYERS ON TOP OF THE LATE ROMAN RAMPART. A ROUGHLY METALLED SURFACE COMPOSED OF SMALL FRAGMENTS OF LIMESTONE RUBBLE WAS FOUND ALIGNED NORTH SOUTH AND WITH A POSSIBLE WHEEL RUT. THIS MAY BE A LANE RUNNING ALONG THE BASE OF THE RAMPART. {1}{2}{3}
