THE EVALUATION OF THE AREA TO BE DEVELOPED FOR NORTH LINCOLNSHIRE COLLEGE ACCOMODATION AT CATHEDRAL STREET PRODUCED LATE SAXON SHELL-TEMPERED POTTERY, DATING TO AFTER THE EARLY/MID-C10. SOME OF THE POTTERY WAS ASSOCIATED WITH BURNT CLAY, STONE AND CHARCOAL RESIDUES, AND THERE WAS A HIGH PROPORTION OF WASTERS. THIS INDICATES THAT POTTERY KILNS WERE LOCATED IN THE VICINITY OF THE TRIAL TRENCHES. {1}
A SUBSEQUENT WATCHING BRIEF ON THE SITE IDENTIFIED AN APPARENTLY HOMOGENOUS MATERIAL OVER MUCH OF THE SITE HAS BEEN INTERPRETED AS A CULTIVATION HORIZON, AND IT CONTAINED OCCASIONAL SHERDS OF LATE SAXON POTTERY. OVERLYING CHARCOAL RICH MATERIAL MAY BE FURTHER INDICATIONS OF INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITY. {2}
