Full Description
Many Roman finds have been recovered from this area from metal detecting. These include brooches (mainly 2nd century) and coins. There are a few further finds from south of Boston Road (see PRN 60639). There are also cropmarks all over this field (see PRN 60590). {1}{2}
Field walking and a metal detector survey were undertaken on land at the Sleaford Town FC, New Sports Facility, Kirkby la Thorpe prior to development. Finds recovered were 433 sherds of Roman pottery, 30 brick and tile fragments and an iron knife blade, possibly from a Roman vanity set. The brick and tile collection suggests that a structure stood here in the Roman period. {3}{4}
Pre-Construct Archaeological Services undertook trial trenching on land to the north of Boston Road, Sleaford. Mid 1st to 3rd century Roman activity was identified through excavation of ditches, large pits or possible ponds, post holes and gullies, pits which are possible hearths or furnaces. A disturbed cremation was found in trench 15 and two Roman inhumations burials in trench 14 and 15. Artefacts include Roman pottery, ceramic building material and limestone blocks. {5}{6}
