Full Description

PRN 60818 ALL SAINTS' CHURCH HAS NORMAN TO DECORATED FEATURES. THE WEST TOWER WAS REBUILT IN 1620. {1}{2}{3} A WATCHING BRIEF IN THE CHURCHYARD REVEALED A LAYER OF GRAVEYARD SOIL DATING TO THE C14 AND SUBSEQUENT LATER POST MEDIEVAL DISTURBANCE. DISARTICULATED AND FRAGMENTED HUMAN BONE WAS FOUND. {4}{5} Stained glass in this church, some of which is in situ, dates to the 14th century.{6} 12th century parish church with 13th and 15th century additions/alterations. The tower was restored in 1620 following the collapse of the spire. The whole church was restored and the chancel rebuilt c. 1885. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {7} A description of the church and its clergy from the medieval period onwards is given in Trollope's 'History of Sleaford'. {8} A fragment of Anglo-Saxon carved stone, probably from a 10th-11th century cross-shaft, is reused in the nave north-east quion (exterior) at c. 1m above present ground level. The stone is in poor condition, with the carving greatly weathered and abraded, perhaps deliberately. There are also three pieces of grave marker or cover with 12th-13th century cross pattee designs in the south aisle window-sill. {9}
