Full Description

The RAF depot, RAF Norton Disney, was opened in 1939, and was originally called Swinderby. It was a Forward Filling Depot and was a bomb, ammunition and oxygen depot. On the outbreak of war it was heavily camouflaged, including the roads, and began to issue bombs to Hemswell, Waddington and Scampton, having 132 airmen staff by July 1940. Mustard gas was also stored here. Completion of the construction of the storage facility was in 1944, and the site was cleaned and decontaminated between 1957 and 1960, and again in 1995. The buildings have been allowed to deteriorate. {1}{2}
