Full Description
RAF Norton Disney was opened in 1939 as a Forward Filling Depot. It was originally called RAF Swinderby, though was re-named when the airfield was opened on the other side of Swinderby village. RAF Norton Disney functioned as a bomb, ammunition and oxygen depot. On the outbreak of war it was heavily camouflaged (including the approach roads), and began to issue bombs to Hemswell, Waddington and Scampton airfields, having 132 airmen staff by July 1940. Mustard gas was also stored here. Full construction of all the storage facilities on the site was not completed until 1944. After the war, the site continued to be occupied, being used to co-ordinate the disposal and decommission of explosives and other ordnance from around the region. The site was closed in 1957, though spent several years being cleaned and decontaminated until 1960, with a second checking and decontamination process being undertaken in 1995. Alongside the bomb and chemical stores on the site were a number of nissen huts for the base personnel. These have now largely been cleared from the site, though some traces and remains of the structures may still be evident. {1}{2}{3}{4}
Most of the former bomb stores structures appear to survive as earthworks and partial wall foundations, with other potential structural remains of the base also visible, as seen on recent lidar data. {5}
