Full Description

60763 THERE ARE FINDS FROM A 1946-48 EXCAVATION IN BRANSTON IN THE STORES IN SHEFFIELD MUSEUM. THESE ARE WORKED AND UNWORKED WOOD FRAGMENTS, CHARCOAL, UNWORKED STONE/PEBBLES, CARBONISED HAZELNUTS, A PEAT SAMPLE, ANIMAL BONE AND A HUMAN JAW. THE WOOD APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN WATERLOGGED WHEN DISCOVERED AND ALLOWED TO DRY OUT. NOTES WITH THE FINDS INCLUDE 'FLOOR OF HUT', 'WHITE STONES ALL TAKEN FROM PEATY BASE AMONGST TWIG MATERIAL, OPPOSITE ENTRANCE AND ABOVE MID-WAY UNREADABLE PEAT SECTION UNREADABLE 19/9/46.', 'SAMPLE OF PEAT FROM ABOVE THE PLATFORM SHOWING THE BAND PARTING 19/9/1946', 'BRANSTON 1948. STONES (A REPRESENTATIVE SELECTION) IN THE PEAT ON DEFINITE LEVELS SHOWING EVIDENCE OF FLOODING. MOSTLY IN POCKETS AND ASSOCIATED WITH FINE SANDS, FORMER NESTINGS (SIC) IN THE PEAT'. THE EXCAVATIONS APPEAR TO HAVE BEEN CARRIED OUT BY A L ARMSTRONG. NO FURTHER INFORMATION. {1}
