Full Description
A large villa probably of courtyard plan consisting of eight rooms including the bath house at the north-west corner of the quadrangle. Excavated by personnel from RAF Cranwell in 1928-29 but the site had been known since 1818. The hypocaust and other rooms have tessellated pavements. Tiles and other building debris are distributed over most of the three fields adjoining the orchard where the excavation took place. The coin series (76-364 AD i.e. presumably Nerva-Jovian inclusive) indicates a foundation at latest in the Severan period, possibly anything up to a century earlier, and evacuation in the troubles of the 360s. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
Very little to be seen now. Some rubble and tile in the arable fields but surprisingly little pottery. {8}
A penannular brooch, 2 brooch pins and part of a melon bead were found at this site. {9}
Seven mosaics have been discovered at this site. They appear to be of 4th century date and the blue-grey tesserae used in some is probably not of local origin, and may have come from Leicestershire. It is suggested that the mosaics were produced by mosaicists from Leicestershire. {10}{11}{12}{13}{14}
