Full Description
Mound measuring approximately 6ft high, shown on the 1814 Ordnance Survey map. The earthwork is flat topped and round with a slight extension on the east and with a large tree growing in the centre. Slight traces of a surrounding ditch have been observed. The mound was scheduled in the 1950s as a barrow. It has also been suggested to be a windmill mound, however, dating from before the creation of Aswarby Park and contemporary with the surrounding ridge and furrow.
There is also a local story that the mound marks the burial of a circus elephant, which died nearby in the late 19th century. The elephant belonged to a circus travelling from Sleaford to Bourne in 1892, when it died on the road near the Tally Ho Inn. It is said that Thomas Whichcote gave permission for the animal to be buried in the park. Other versions of the story claim that the burial was made at the roadside, however, a little to the north and without a mound. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
The mound is clearly marked on the 1814 Ordnance Survey surveyor's drawing, within the 18th century park, prior to its 19th century expansion. Whatever the origin of this mound, it is likely that it served as a prospect mound within the park. {7}
The mound lies within Aswarby Park, which has been designated as a Registered Park (see PRN 63997). {8}
