Full Description
60462
In May 1993 the Washingborough Archaeology Group identified an artefact scatter which included in excess of 300 sherds of late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pottery over three fields (Field 13, 31 and 32). Field 13 was walked twice (2/5/93 - 10m transects N-S and 5/12/93 - 10m transects E-W). The site is near the excavated site at the pumping station on the Witham, where debris had collected as a result of being washed downstream, and therefore this site may be the result of the same depositional process. Alternatively it could imply the presence of a settlement. The pottery is all hand-made and both fine and coarse wares are present. The types of vessel represented comprise fine, thin-walled bowls, thin-walled, rounded jars with upright rims, and coarser jars with stubby upright rims and rounded or more angular body profile. The percentage of fine and medium fine bowls and jars is high (34%) which is rare in the East Midlands. One sherd only has an applied cordon of the type noted in Deverel-Rimbury cemeteries the nearest known example of which is at Pasture Lodge, Long Bennington. One of the sherds has deeply incised decoration, similar to examples from Fengate, Peterborough, and thus, if the identification is correct, is the first recorded example from Lincolnshire. Flint and human bone (clavicle and femur) were also recovered, but these may not be contemporary with the pottery. {2}{3}
