Full Description

60408 A WELL-PRESERVED CROSS SHAFT IN THE SOUTH AISLE HAS 2 REGISTERS OF INTERLACE ON THE BROAD FACES AND ZIGZAG ALONG BOTH SIDES. IN ONE BROAD FACE IS A CRUCIFIXION SCENE WITH ST.MARY AND ST.JOHN; ON THE REVERSE, A FIGURE WITHIN MANDORLA. A FINE LATE C10 OR EARLY C11 PIECE. FOUND BUILT INTO THE OLD MANOR HOUSE (DURING REBUILDING IN 1892?) AND BROUGHT INTO THE CHURCH IN 1910. {1}{2}{3} SEE DAVIES FOR A DETAILED DESCRIPTION. {4} Eleventh century crosses with decorated interlace which have set within them small narrative panels, such as this one in Harmston, are found throughout the Anglo-Scandinavian period. {5} An eleventh century cross-head, reused as a window frame in the west wall of the west tower to light the stair turret in the north west corner. It is an almost complete cross-head with ring. The transverse arms are of different form from the upper and lower ones. The transverse arms are splayed while the upper and lower are curved. There is a central circular boss with a drilled hole right through the centre, apparently an original feature. The ring is undecorated and of sub-rectangular section but no evidence survives for the junction of between the cross-head and shaft below. It is of similar stone and of approximately the correct dimensions to have come from the shaft in the south aisle. {5}
