Full Description
THE REMAINS OF 2 RICHLY DECORATED ANGLO-SAXON CROSS SHAFTS STAND LOOSE IN THE NORTH AISLE OF ALL SAINTS' CHURCH. CABLE-MOULDED BORDERS AND INTERLACE DECORATION. NO LOCAL KNOWLEDGE COULD BE FOUND IN 1964 RELATING TO THESE STONES. {1}{2}{3}
SEE BUTLER FOR DETAILED DESCRIPTION AND ILLUSTRATIONS. {4}
The carved stone is believed to represent two non-adjacent fragments of a grave slab, one of which has been reused twice. Taken together these two stones allow the almost complete reconstruction of a good example of a late mid-Kesteven grave cover. The decoration here is of the characteristic style and many of the distinctive interlace motifs are represented. {5}
