Full Description

60405 PART OF A SAXON CROSS SHAFT DECORATED WITH INTERLACE AND ?RING-AND-DOT WAS FOUND BUILT INTO THE FOUNDATIONS OF A WALL AT THE BACK OF THE STABLES IN 1879. THE STONE IS NOW IN THE GROUNDS TO THE SOUTH OF THE HALL AT SK97336065. {1}{2}{3} It is now thought to be a mid tenth to eleventh century grave cover of mid-Kesteven type. It probably originally came from the church, but was reused during works at Coleby Hall. At this time it was trimmed, and so parts of the decoration are missing on the lid. There is a distinctive run of loops across the top (the only other one known is at Colsterworth). It also has a large cross on the lid which occupies most of this face. The cross is surrounded by interlace. {4}
