Full Description

The village or market cross at Rowston, which stood on the village green near the Church of St Clement, was restored in 1910 retaining the top step, base and shaft of the medieval original. {1} The village cross was built in the 14th century and constructed in limestone ashlar. A triple stepped square base supports the remnant of the lower shaft cross. The shaft is chamfered at the base. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} Rowston village cross is a good example of the remains of a medieval standing cross with a stepped base. Situated on the village green, it is believed to stand in or near its original position. Limited disturbance of the area immediately surrounding the cross indicates that archaeological deposits relating to the monument's construction and use are likely to survive intact. There is a full description in the revised Scheduling Document 22638. {3} The base is 14 1/2 inches (35cm) tall. The cross occupies an area of 0.03H, 2m in length and stands 1m high. {4} In the main street there is the base and part of the shaft of a 14th century village cross. {5}
