Fragments of Anglo-Saxon stonework were found within the Church of St Michael and All Angels during the restoration of 1860-1. The fragments comprised two pieces of carved stone with interlaced cable moudlings, and were thought to have formed part of a roughly carved oblong font. The pieces were thought to date to about 900 AD, and were kept on display within the church, in a side chapel. The fragments may suggest an earlier church structure was present within the village, pre-dating the current 11th century church. {1} Pevsner considered the decorated interlaced sculpture to be two sections of cross shafts, one of which had been re-used as a cistern. The fragments were placed in the south aisle, at the west end. {2} One of these fragments of sculpture has also been interpreted as a section of a large decorated grave-cover of mid-Kesteven type, dated to the mid 10th to early 11th century. It may have been reused as a tank, possibly a font in the post-Conquest period. It has been thought that the other fragment in the church was part of the same monument, although it is also suggested that it is part of a second, perhaps even larger cover of the same type and date. {3}
