Full Description

PRN 60359 [This record contains information from PRN 60836, now deleted.] Geophysical survey and fieldwalking in November 1980 along the route of the Hatton-Peterborough gas pipeline identified a possible Romano-British farmstead. The geophysical survey identified a possible rectilinear structure and several linear anomalies. Fieldwalking of the site produced a large number of tiles, and Roman pottery - mostly grit-tempered greywares, but including sherds of Samian and castor ware (some with traces of Barbotine decoration). Finds totals: tile 28; pottery 167, of which 11 were Samian, and 5 castor ware. (This site was initially interpreted as a possible villa, but there is little evidence to suggest a high status site.) {1} Roman material was observed here in 1976. {2} A possible villa site is known from this area; no further details are given. {3}
