60312 THERE ARE SEVERAL TUMULI OR BARROWS HERE AND IN TWO OF THEM SEVERAL COFFINS AND HUMAN BONES WERE FOUND IN 1817. {1} CROP AND SOILMARKS OF AT LEAST TEN BARROWS OF A DISPERSED CEMETERY VISIBLE ON ST.JOSEPH APs. 3 BARROWS SEEM TO HAVE SURVIVED AS EARTHWORKS INTO THE 1960s. {2}{3}{4}{5}, HTM 6M A human skeleton in an almost decayed wooden coffin and an 'urn with with brass handles' was found in 1817 when a mound in Catley Close was levelled. Several further coffins were discovered when a second mound was levelled in the same year. These mounds were removed by the farmer in 1976. He records that nothing was found except 'dark stains' in the centre of these mounds, which were of solid clay. The mounds were located at TF 1172 5557, TF 1173 5562 TF 1175 5569. {6}
