Full Description

A medieval moated site is located in Norton Disney, to the south-west of the church. It may have been the site of the moated manor of the de Isigny family, known from documentary sources of the 13th century. The site was visited by staff of the City and County Museum several times during 1978, whilst the site was being ploughed and infilled. Traces of the western, southern and northern sides of the moat were still visible at this time as slight earthworks, following ten years of gradual bulldozing. The current Manor House to the north of the site is believed to have been built in the early 18th century, using building materials salvaged from the original manor house that was sited within the moated area (see MLI84084). The area was field walked after the ploughing, although no traces of any earlier structure on the site seemed to survive. Photographs were also taken during the destruction and infilling of the moat. {1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6} The southern and eastern arms of the moat were clearly discernible on aerial photographs of this area, examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. The eastern arm of the moat is also depicted on the 2nd edition 25" Ordnance Survey County Series map. {7}{8}
