Full Description

Remains of a homestead moat which was once the seat of the families of Creons (or Crouns) and Pedwardines, situated to the south-west of the church. The current Manor House within the moat dates to the 19th century. {1}{2} Only the eastern arm of the moat remains, being 48m long, 7m wide and water-filled. The later building work on and around the platform has destroyed any evidence of the north and south arms but a dip in the ground between the house and the church does suggest an original, almost square raised platform surrounded on four sides by a moat. {3}{4}{5} This site may have originated prior to the Norman conquest. Its earliest discernible phase, however, appears to be a motte, presumably of the 12th century, on which Manor Farm House currently stands (although indications of the bailey are not immediately apparent). The site appears to have been remodelled in the 14th century and may have been surrounded by a stone wall at this time. There is also evidence of possible stone robbing or dumping activity in the form of deep double ditches to the south and west. It is also suggested that this site is the 'burh' referred to in the 'Burton' element of the village name. {6} The 19th century house stands on a platform with a length of ditch along its west side, which is commonly interpreted as a moated site, if not originally the motte that would be consistent with the status of the holding. The house probably marks the location of the manor house within the curia. It might therefore indicate the location of earlier manorial halls. {7}
